Indications/Uses
Lowering of elevated conc of uric acid in the plasma. Slow depletion of urate tophi & deposits in the tissues.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Gout Adult 250 mg bd, may be increased by 0.5-g increments every 4 wk. Max: 2 g/day. Probenecid & penicillin therapy Adult 2 g daily in divided doses. Childn 2-14 yr Initially 25 mg/kg body wt. Maintenance: 40 mg/kg body wt/day in 4 divided doses.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take w/ meals or antacids. Ensure adequate fluid intake.
Contraindications
Blood dyscrasias or uric kidney stones. Childn <2 yr.
Special Precautions
Maintain adequate fluid intake to maintain urine alkalinity. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, urinary frequency, hypersensitivity reactions including anaphylaxis, dermatitis, pruritus & fever, sore gums, flushing, dizziness, anaemia. Rarely, nephrotic syndrome, hepatic necrosis & aplastic anaemia.
Drug Interactions
Indomethacin, pyrazinamide, frusemide, naproxen, chlorthiazide.
